The Philippines Richest

Posted by: myrobert

Forbes has released their Philippines 40 Richest ranking. Topping the list are the usual, Zobel de Ayala Family, Henry Sy and Lucio Tan. Surprisingly, ranking 4th and 5th is Andrew Tan and  Manny Villar.

Both Andrew Tan and Manny Villar made their billions in real estate. Andrew Tan owns Megaworld and Empire East. He also owns a big share of McDonalds Philippines. Manny Villar on the other hand owns Vista Land, the mother company of various real estate company catering to various market segments.

What made Tan and Villar jumped to higher ranking is the value of their company holdings. Since their companies are public, the rise in stock prices have made their wealth multiply.

Interestingly, John Gokongwei is only at number 15. His fall in ranking can probably be attributed to the donation of half of his wealth to charity.

donation of half of his wealth to charity? wow!!! galing naman. kung lahat ng mayayaman s pinas ksing bait nya malamang mawawala or unti-unti mababawasan ang kahirapan s ating bansa!

Mabuhay ka Mr. John Gokongwei !!!

I beg to disagree, Denizvoi! Hindi mawawala ang kahirapan sa ating bansa - or anywhere in the world, for that matter - by sharing one’s wealth (this is not to say that one should not share one’s blessings). But inspite of it - the poor will remain poor, and the rich will continue to be rich.

Why? The mindset of the wealthy is totally different from the mindset of the poor… Iba ang kaisipan ng isang maunlad at hindi maunlad na tao. At ang “mindset” o kaisipang ito ang nagiging sanhi ng kahirapan o kaunlaran sa buhay ng bawat isa.

it’s alright if the money was donated to charity.

however, if it went to gokongwei’s own charity (his own foundation), that’s an altogether different story, if you know how corporations work.

it could just be a tax avoidance scheme also. it is perfectly legal under the law, pero you’re purpose is no longer noble; hindi na para makatulong sa mahihirap pero para makatulong sa pamilya mong wag maghirap (na magbayad ng tax).

ganyan usually gawain nila, it’s like putting your money from one pocket to another pocket. pocket mo pa rin yun, ultimately. mabango pa pangalan mo.

i’m not saying na ganun si mr. gokongwei. but only God knows.
